Restorative Circles are a very specific process. Core to RJOY Circles is the facilitator’s preparation. Proper planning opens the space in an intentional way that allows for everyone’s full participation. The use of a “Talking Piece” minimizes the facilitator’s voice since the Talking Piece guides the dialogue. Also, there is consensus in drafting group agreements and in identifying the values participants expect the process to be guided by. 

RJOY Circles always include a “Center Piece.” The Center Piece, can be simple or elaborate. It is a visual reminder that evokes the wisdom of those who came before. Center Pieces have a variety of talking pieces which are selected for a round of dialogue but can be switched out in subsequent rounds for another talking piece. The objects in Center Piece have meaning for the person who shares it. The Center Piece,  also contains representations of the 4 essential elements of life: air, water, earth and fire. A living plant is encouraged.

Central to a Restorative Circle is the belief that the group’s wisdom is superior to that of the individual. By conducting a Circle with fidelity, the process shows the solution.
